RS485 is a serial communication standard that allows multiple devices to be connected on the same bus. Unlike its predecessor, RS232, RS485 offers a longer transmission distance and better resistance to interference.

How does RS485 technology work?

It uses a twisted pair of wires to transmit data differentially. This means that the data is represented by the voltage difference between the two wires, which improves noise immunity.

Advantages of the RS485 standard

  • Long range: RS485 allows for data transmission over longer distances than RS232, making it ideal for access control systems.
  • Multipoint: Multiple devices can be connected on the same RS485 bus, reducing cabling costs.
  • Resistance to interference: Thanks to its differential transmission, RS485 is less sensitive to electrical noise, making it more reliable in harsh industrial environments.
  • Half-duplex: Communication occurs in one direction at a time, avoiding data collisions.

What are its applications?

It is widely used in many areas, including:

  • Building security management: Access control and security alarm management
  • Building automation: Building management, lighting control
  • Industrial automation: Machine control, data acquisition, sensor networks
  • Instrumentation: Data acquisition for measuring instruments

CDVI integrates it into many of its products to ensure the highest possible security and communication efficiency.
